When your teen is struggling with substance use, the path forward can feel unclear. You may have tried other approaches without seeing real change, or you may be searching for help for the first time and not sure what to look for. At The Maples, we offer Twelve-Step Facilitation in Baton Rouge as part of a residential program built around what adolescents need for effective support.
Twelve-Step Facilitation (TSF) is a structured clinical approach in which our therapist actively guides your teen through the principles at the heart of TSF programs like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. This approach helps your teen practice accountability, strengthen self-awareness, and engage with peers who understand the demands of recovery. For your teen dealing with severe substance use, that level of guided engagement can be an important part of effective treatment. What Does TSF Look Like at the Maples?
At The Maples, we integrate TSF into our full clinical program at the Baton Rouge facility rather than offering it in isolation. Your teen will meet with our therapist twice per week and see a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist with additional certification in addiction medicine once per week. Weekly substance abuse groups run alongside this individual work. TSF complements other modalities we use, including:
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Motivational interviewing
Our approach provides your teen with support across multiple clinical modalities at once.
What To Expect During Your Teen’s Stay
Our Baton Rouge residential program runs 90 days, giving your teen structured time to progress past the initial phase of treatment and practice consistent TSF behaviors. Alongside TSF, your teen will have access to:
- Equine therapy
- Art therapy
- Music therapy
- Yoga
- Personal training
These additional opportunities provide structured experiences both inside and outside the clinical setting.
Our campus is a small residential setting on three acres of land, with just 12 beds. This size is intentional, allowing our staff to understand your teen, her background, and the challenges she is addressing. Treatment here is intentionally structured to avoid an institutional environment.
Does My Teen Have To Follow a Specific Religion To Participate?
Many families have this concern before they call us, and it is a fair one. TSF-informed counseling at our Baton Rouge facility does not ask your teen to adopt any particular faith. The spiritual side of 12-step work is personal and flexible, focusing on honesty, humility, and accountability rather than doctrine. Our therapists guide your teen through those concepts in a way that lets your teen reflect their own values and background.
If your teen prefers a different framework entirely, we also offer an alternative program known as SMART Recovery. Some teens use both. Our job is to help your teen explore what aligns with her needs, not to offer a uniform approach.
When Can My Teen Begin Her Recovery?
Recovery takes courage, and asking for help requires it as well. If your teen is struggling with substance use—whether alcohol, opioids, or prescription medications—our Baton Rouge residential TSF program provides structured care and consistent clinical support she can rely on.
The structure of TSF, combined with our full therapeutic team and small community setting, provides your teen with a stable foundation for early treatment work.
